Welcome to the February 2010 edition of our eNewsletter.
Associate Editor Paul Hahn, Marco Cecala and I are on the floor at the World of Concrete in Las Vegas, seeing lots of old friends and checking out all the new technology at the show. We unveiled machinecontrolonline a year ago at this very show. Over the last year the team has been hard at work building a very valuable resource—and the newsletter reaches nearly 15,000 readers every two weeks. Thanks to everybody who has contributed to make the site and the newsletter a success.
In this issue, we have 7 new and exclusive articles from our team of industry veterans. Paul Hahn discusses reflectorless total stations and Marco Cecala reviews building data with AutoCAD. Other topics include project and grade management by Jay Jones and Chad Cooper brings us more tricks of the trade for model building. We would also like to congratulate Nigel Adams for launching his new company, On Grade, across the big pond in Poole, UK. Nigel elaborates on his new business partnership with Gary Escott and where they are headed. My article discusses the business case and payback points I have compiled from discussions with managers and experts from the solid waste landfill industry.
I hope you enjoy the newsletter and please stay tuned visiting us often as we update the website daily. As always, please drop me a line if there is a subject you would like to see more information on.

3D Machine Control Hits Its Stride with 3D-MC2

By his own admission, Roger Croft is not easily impressed with most of the new machine control products that come out for today’s construction professional. Landfill GPS Management Systems by Randy Noland: Business Case & Payback Points - For years, most landfill operators have tracked densities and compaction of waste by using aerial topography (fly overs) and ground surveys (topo’s.) It's All About the Data by Marco Cecala: Software Review: 3D Data and AutoCAD - After my review of Carlson Construction 2010 for building data last month, I got a bunch of emails that asked this same basic question; why do I need to buy an add on program to AutoCAD, can’t I build data with AutoCAD? The answer is yes…sort of. Read on.
We need to look at the …

Machine Control & the Land Surveyor by Jay Jones: Managing Your Grade and Your Project - I have noted many times in past articles, the advantages of using machine control on a project over traditional survey and construction layout methods for grading a project site.
