Welcome to the October 2010 edition of our eNewsletter.
We're publishing today, live and on-site in Cologne, Germany. It has been a busy couple of weeks here in Europe, leading up to InterGEO. The show is a buzz with news and new products. However, this year is exceptionally exciting, given our announcement of Machine Control Magazine. That's right! You heard it here first, the press release is here. We're planning at least 4 digital editions for 2011, the result of steady contributions from each of our esteemed contributors. We couldn't have done it without you guys. And of course, you, the reader--your support makes it all work. Please check out our announcement when you can.
Our team of industry experts has authored 7 new articles in this issue. Paul Hahn reviews a well-conducted time study for machine contro, analyzing the technology benefits to traditional grading methods; Marco Cecala discusses the accuracy requirements of DTM's. Jay Jones again connects machine control to land surveying while Chad Cooper and Ron Ciccarone provide insight into the data prep side of the positioning and machine control. I would like to welcome Jeff Winke's return as guest author. Jeff's contribution, "Complex project is no fish story" is featured below as our Spotlight article.
We continue to hear from our readers about new projects and bidding opportunities. If you are considering positioning and 3D machine control technology, welcome. MachineControlOnline.com is committed to serve as your knowledge base.
As always, I hope you enjoy this newsletter! Please stay tuned, visiting us often as we update the website daily. Please drop me a line if there is any subject about which you would like to see more information. I personally read every email!

Complex Project is No Fish Story
Even the best fishermen have the dream of, just once, casting a line into the teeming pond of a fish hatchery. But keep your fantasies to yourself, bud - it ain't gonna happen. To even get to the point of toting your pole and tackle to the fish hatchery, it has to be built. Here's where Badger Environmental & Earthworks, Inc., Westby, Wis. fit in. They are currently finishing up Phase II of the 160-acre Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery located in Wild Rose, Wis.– straddling State Highway 22. Wild Rose is 50 miles west of ...

How Accurate does Data need to be? by Marco Cecala: – There is a natural progression a data builder goes through. The first is just learning the product. This relates to the actual button pushing and navigation. After that becomes easier to do, the user starts to begin to really see the 3D part of the process. It is one thing to think in 3 dimensions, and another to be able to tell a …

Building a Simple Site - Speed vs. Haste by Chad Cooper: – During the Second World War our ground troops learned a lot of lessons about the best way to fight a war in the 20th century. Unfortunately, most of these lessons were learned under fire from our opponents. One of the early lessons learned was the difference between haste and speed. In combat, troops were ...

When DO I Start Modeling? by Ron Ciccarone, LS: – If you read my article last month, I just got another site to model and it was rotated off north and in a bogus coordinate system. This should be one of the first things to check and notify your client. Someone will have to contact the engineer or surveyor. You can always model the site and later rotate and translate, but be sure ...
