Welcome to the May 2010 edition of our eNewsletter. I just returned from Waste Expo 2010 held in Atlanta, Georgia. The number of exhibitors and attendees spoke volumes about the optimism for the solid waste and landfill business. It was also good to see old friends and meet new business contacts (see my blog). I filmed brief snippets of the 3-day event, posted below as Video of the Week.
In this issue, we have six new articles. Paul Hahn asks the question, Is Machine Control Just for the Big Guys? Marco Cecala and Chad Cooper discuss return on investment and other payback benefits of 3D data. Jay Jones shares his experience attending a recent data prep class presented by Bruce Flora, LS. Nigel Adams discusses his experience as both an engineer and sales professional, and industry veteran Ron Ciccarone discusses the basics of triangulated irregular networks (TINs).
We continue to hear from our readers about new projects and bidding opportunities. If you are considering positioning and 3D machine control technology, welcome. MachineControlOnline.com is committed to serve as your knowledge base.
I hope you enjoy this newsletter! Please stay tuned, visiting us often as we update the website daily. As always, please drop me a line if there is any subject about which you would like to see more information. I personally read every email! |

Bypass extension tests 3D model and machine-control technology
Bypass highways may not be the most glamorous of engineering projects, but they do have a profound effect on communities. Since divided highways control foot and vehicular traffic, planners use them to expand or limit access as needed to enliven centers of interest or protect them from excess flow. This requires ....

From the Machine Control Online Authors... New Articles for May, 2010:

The Bottom Line by Paul Hahn: Is Machine Control Just for the Big Guys? - Often times when new productivity-enhancing technology emerges, many think that it is only applicable to certain segments of the market. 3D machine control is one of these technologies. Many small to medium sized contractors erroneously believe that the benefits of early adoption are only for ...

It's All About the Data by Marco Cecala: How Data Affects Return on Investment - A lot of my fellow authors have been writing about return on investment. In this installment, I would like to offer my unique perspective on the subject.
My first exposure to a salesman’s discussion regarding ROI (return on investment) was when I was the purchasing authority deciding on …

Machine Control & the Land Surveyor by Jay Jones: Educating the End User - I recently took part in a three day Terramodel training class put on by Keystone Precision Instruments and taught by Bruce Flora, LS of Virginia. Bruce is a land surveyor that has been involved with machine control since its inception. He is an industry veteran and a dynamic speaker. If you ever have the chance to take one of his classes ...

Data Prep: Tips, Tricks & Techniques by Chad Cooper: Highway Data Building – Payoff for Your Efforts Typical - As anyone who has ever written an online article, blog or posted to a social website knows, observing your readers responses to what you are writing can tell you a number of things. First, are people reading what I am writing? Second, are they interested ...

Don’t Sell Machine Control Short by Nigel Adams: – For the past few months I have spent considerable time “at the coalface”, meeting customers, demonstrating product, listening to their needs and trying to offer a suitable excavator machine control solution. It is a most refreshing experience and one I would recommend to anyone who wants to see how the real world ...

The Basics of a TIN by Ron Ciccarone, LS: – For this article, I am exploring the very basic essentials of a Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN). The basic elements of a TIN are relatively simple. It can be boiled to two objects, a 3D point and a breakline. I realize some systems are including other objects to define TINs such as contours, but when the smoke clears it used ...
