Welcome to the mid-October 2010 edition of our eNewsletter.
First of all, I would like to extend heartfelt condolences to the family of Gerhard Lengemann, who passed on October 14th. He was an industry icon and truly lived the American Dream. An inspiration to us all, Gerhard will be missed by many. You can view a brief movie of Lengemann's early life as told by Gerhard himself. The video was shot and produced by Topcon Positioning Systems, who awarded Gerhard their Spirit of Excellence award in 2004.
As mentioned in the last newsletter, I returned on October 10th from a two-week business trip in Europe. The trip concluded at this year's Intergeo in Cologne, Germany, held October 5-7. After a couple of years of attending great shows with dismal attendance, it was wonderful to see such activity. Billed as the world's largest geo show, it attracted more than 16,500 people. Could Intergeo's success signal a tipping point for an economic rebound? Difficult to make this conclusion just yet but the word on the exhibit floor was that Europe is doing quite well.
Here are links to Spatial Media's images taken at Intergeo and related events.

I would also like to mention the positive response to our announcement last issue of the soon-to-be-released Machine Control Magazine. We'll have four digital issues next year, with the first two releasing at World of Concrete and ConExpo 2011. Please contact us for advertising rates and more information.
We continue to hear from our readers about new projects and bidding opportunities. If you are considering positioning and 3D machine control technology, welcome. MachineControlOnline.com is committed to serve as your knowledge base.
As always, I hope you enjoy this newsletter! Please stay tuned, visiting us often as we update the website daily. Please drop me a line if there is any subject about which you would like to see more information. I personally read every email!

How Accurate does Data need to be? by Marco Cecala: – There is a natural progression a data builder goes through. The first is just learning the product. This relates to the actual button pushing and navigation. After that becomes easier to do, the user starts to begin to really see the 3D part of the process. It is one thing to think in 3 dimensions, and another to be able to tell a …

Building a Simple Site - Speed vs. Haste by Chad Cooper: – During the Second World War our ground troops learned a lot of lessons about the best way to fight a war in the 20th century. Unfortunately, most of these lessons were learned under fire from our opponents. One of the early lessons learned was the difference between haste and speed. In combat, troops were ...

When DO I Start Modeling? by Ron Ciccarone, LS: – If you read my article last month, I just got another site to model and it was rotated off north and in a bogus coordinate system. This should be one of the first things to check and notify your client. Someone will have to contact the engineer or surveyor. You can always model the site and later rotate and translate, but be sure ...
