Welcome to the mid-month February 2010 edition of our eNewsletter.
As I was finishing the last newsletter, I was landing in Las Vegas to attend the World of Concrete. Attendance was lighter than in years past, but vendors were optimistic about 2010 and eager to display their new technology offerings. With me were Paul Hahn and Marco Cecala of MCo. Please see Marco’s blog summary of WOC.
Please join me in welcoming the newest contributing author for MCo, Ron Ciccaraone, LS. I have known Ron for years, from his days at Plus 3, Spectra Precision and Trimble. Ron is an industry veteran, bringing his valuable perspective and knowledge to our community. Click here to read Ron’s first article, " 3D Modeling 101 – Surface Models."
In what we hope to be the first of many contributions, I would also like to welcome two guest authors: In "Untangling Networks" Shawn "Shag" Greer introduces us to real-time networks. And returning is Jürgen Reineke, an industry veteran residing in Germany. His article, "3D Drilling Application: Using GPS-based Machine Control for Soil Reclamation" offers yet another application for positioning technology.
I hope you enjoy this newsletter! Please stay tuned, visiting us often as we update the website daily. As always, please drop me a line if there is any subject about which you would like to see more information. I personally read every email!

Machine Control Online is updated 24/7 with the latest news and announcements affecting the Machine Control business..
3D Drilling Application: Using GPS Machine Control for Soil Reclamation
Soil exchange drillings are a popular practice within reclamation of contaminated soil. Within this drilling & overlapping large holes and afterwards backfilled draw out the burdened ground. German based company DEMLER Spezialtiefbau GmbH + Co. KG is using a Prolec pcX3D GPS with ascos-correction datas (reference network), to automatically position the drilling rod via satellite signals. Thereby the exposure of employees on jobsite is minimized and efficiency improved.
Tar oil is a spin off product within power generation and therefore is seen very often in grounds of older …

Landfill GPS Management Systems by Randy Noland: Business Case & Payback Points - For years, most landfill operators have tracked densities and compaction of waste by using aerial topography (fly overs) and ground surveys (topo’s.) While these methods can help track and improve a landfill’s performance, they can also be expensive, labor-intensive and ...

It's All About the Data by Marco Cecala: Software Review: 3D Data and AutoCAD - After my review of Carlson Construction 2010 for building data last month, I got a bunch of emails that asked this same basic question; why do I need to buy an add on program to AutoCAD, can’t I build data with AutoCAD? The answer is yes…sort of. Read on.
We need to look at the …

Machine Control & the Land Surveyor by Jay Jones: Managing Your Grade and Your Project - I have noted many times in past articles the advantages of using machine control on a project over traditional survey and construction layout methods for grading a project site. I don’t believe you can reasonably argue the fact that machine control, when properly utilized, will ...

3D Modeling 101: Surface Models by Ron Ciccarone, LS: – Have you ever sat in a meeting where 50% of the words uttered were acronyms? At a presentation on 3D Models, the following was stated, "the 3D Model is probably based on a TIN with BLs created from a TS or GPS and you have to be aware of the RATs." I looked at the guy next to me and tried to signal, don’t ...
